CCCOnline hosted the virtual March 27, 2015 via WebEx. A professional development presentation was given regarding innovation in transforming online courses.
The presenters were kind enough to share a document of the presentation highlights, and also share some thoughts about the content:
We’ll highlight what’s innovative here at CCCOnline and share some samples of work created with the use of various authorware which can help transform online course content into stories. We’ll also share some free resources which add emphasis to these stories.

Our annual retreat was held on September 26, 2014 at the historic Penrose House in Colorado Springs. Sixteen eLCC members attended the retreat and we first met as a large group to discuss the annual report, consortium buying and networking, and professional development. Then we divided into 2 working subgroups, Communication and Website, to come up with goals for the upcoming year.

September 2014 Retreat Minutes
Colorado Mountain College (CMC) thanks all those who were able to join us for the meeting held today, June 27th, 2014 at our Breckenridge Campus. Robert Cartelli, our 2014 nominee for eLCC Educator of the Year Award, inspired us with his presentation titled Student Reflection and Self-Assessment: How to Improve Your Course in 8 Minutes. Robert enthusiastically shared his MAR-326 self-assessments delivered at the Midterm and Final which have resulted in 3,000 pages of feedback from students on various topics like what is going well, what is not, what they are learning, and what sort of learning environment Robert has created in his courses.
Robert emphasized in order to receive useful, honest feedback from students he first must create a welcoming, friendly environment where students trust that their openness with be heard and valued. Robert explained that beyond creating engaging content and assignments, he wants to see his students transform into future business leaders and successful students. The carefully crafted self-assessments are used as an indicator of how each course he teaches is going for the students and provides him information to make changes in the middle of the semester if necessary. He also makes continuous improvement after each term based on the final reflections to transform his courses to include the most effective team driven, project-based assignments that are rigorous and technology-packed to create students who know how to FIO (Figure it Out).
Regis University was pleased to host the February 2014 eLCC monthly meeting. Approximately 27 people attended including eLCC members and Regis University faculty and staff. After approval of January meeting minutes, Kathy Keairns launched into two professional development presentations.
The first presentation was by Dr. Cheryl Kruschke, Associate Professor of Nursing at the Rueckert Hartman College for Health Professions. Cheryl took attendees on a tour of VoiceThread and its use in Nursing financial courses. VoiceThread provides a method for adding audio comments to PowerPoint slides. Cheryl stated that she has had overwhelmingly positive results. Nursing students, normally reticent about audio comments, warmed up quickly to the technology.
The second session was presented by Drs. Tim Noteboom and Heidi Eigsti, professors at the School of Physical Therapy at the College for Health Professions. Tim and Heidi presented on results of a study examining the perceived effectiveness of using audio-enhanced presentations (AEPs). Survey results were mixed, with students preferring AEPs that were presented in an enthusiastic manner and that were a good fit for the topic. Tim and Heidi then played several example slides from a course that was singled out as using AEPs in an exemplary manner. The AEP presentation stimulated a spirited discussion on AEP best practices, technologies, and pedagogy.
After a boxed lunch, Kathy and Jean focused on remaining agenda items that included co-chair nominations, an April conference update, and institutional updates. Complete meeting minutes will be posted on the eLCC website.
After meeting adjournment, several eLCCers took a stroll of the Regis campus before heading home. Thank you, eLCC, for allowing Regis to host your fabulous organization for a day.

This month’s professional development activity will feature faculty perspectives on the use of audio in online coursework. Dr. Cheryl Kruschke, Associate Professor at the Loretto Heights School of Nursing, will present on her use of VoiceThread for narrated discussions. Next, Dr. Tim Noteboom, Professor, and Dr. Heidi Eigsti, Associate Professor, School of Physical Therapy, will present preliminary results from their survey of student perceptions of narrated presentations. And Dr. Ken Sagendorf, Director for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, will provide perspective.
Jerry Overmyer gave us an excellent overview of “flipped” learning at our January meeting at UNC. Jerry is the creator of the Flipped Learning Network’s professional learning and community of practice. Jerry shared his unique insight and expertise on flipped learning to show how flipped learning has evolved immensely in the last 7 years. His presentation defined the basics of flipped learning, dispelled some misconceptions, and showed the easiest ways to take the first-steps towards flipping. Jerry credited Colorado’s own Aaron Sams and Jonathan Bergmann from Woodland Park for being the first instructors to “flip” their classrooms.

The University of Northern Colorado is hosting the January eLCC monthly meeting on January 24th from 10-2:00. RSVP to Berniece Mitchell at CETL@unco.edu (970-351-2885) no later than Wed, 1/22/14 and by Friday, 1/17/14 to receive a mailed parking pass. Otherwise, on the day of the meeting, you will have to come in to building get a pass, then return to car (not far, parking lot outside of the building).
In addition to our regular business meeting, there will be a presentation on the flipped classroom from Jerry Overmyer, Mathematics and Science Outreach Coordinator at the UNC Mathematics and Science Teaching Institute.
Jerry Overmyer is the creator of the Flipped Learning Network’s professional learning and community of practice with over 16,000 flipping members. Jerry will use his unique insight and expertise on flipped learning to show how flipped learning has evolved immensely in just 7 years. This presentation will show how the enormous changes in technology have allowed flipped learning to become accessible and feasible to almost all teachers and students. The presentation will define the basics of flipped learning, dispel some misconceptions, and show the easiest ways to take the first-steps towards flipping. Jerry will also show how the flipped community supports itself through networks, webinars and professional development opportunities.

– Proceed on I-25 to the US Highway 34 exit (labeled Loveland-Greeley).
– Take the exit, going east, on Highway 34.
– After five miles, remain on the Greeley/Ft Morgan route and continue east (Don’t take the business route exit)As you reach Greeley, look for the 11th Avenue intersection.
– Turn left and proceed 8 blocks. As you drive north on 11th avenue you will see the West Campus buildings to your left. The University Center is another block farther, and on your right.
– Turn left on 20th Street and proceed 3 blocks to 14th Avenue.
– Turn left on 14th Avenue and proceed to the stop sign. The building on your left, across the corner from where you are stopped, is Candelaria Hall, your destination.
– Enter the building through the door facing west, towards the north end of the building and proceed to the elevator. Go up one floor and turn right when you exit the elevator.
2013 Retreat Meeting
The eLearning Consortium of Colorado held their annual retreat on Friday, September 27, 2013 at the Parker Campus of Arapahoe Community College. The theme of the event, based on Lewis Carroll’s novel, Alice in Wonderland, focused the attendees “to talk of many things.” Before getting into the retreat’s primary focus, member discussed business including the eLCC-Metro State University Symposium scheduled for October 25. Several presentations will be given by eLCC member institutions and eLCC members are encouraged to have their campus faculty register soon. Another item for discussion was the WCET Consortium web site that now lists eLCC.
Additionally, within the next few months, a nominating committee will be formed to recruit nominations for eLCC co-chairs. As has been the tradition of the past few years in eLCC, there will be a co-chair from a two year and a co-chair from a 4 year college/university. Kathy Keairns is ready to “pass the leadership torch” and Jean Otte will be retiring. The organization has thrived under the leadership of these two dynamic leaders.
Then the meeting moved into the planning activities which began with a fun filled trivia challenge focusing on Alice in Wonderland. The members present broke into two work groups: one focused on the eLCC web site and the other one focused on the Annual Report. After an extended time, the entire group reconvened to discuss strategies to improve both vital activities of eLCC. Several members volunteered to work on specific issues discussed by the members, and changes will be made within the next few months.
